BIOGRAPHY 2002
The band was formed in early 1997 consisting of vocalist Subash,
guitarists Bala and Selvam, bassist Arunan and drummer Shiva.
Together, they played a number of gigs before deciding to record the album.
KALIYUGA (KA-lee-u-ga) is a melodic death metal band from Singapore
that will be releasing their debut album. The band consists of Subash,
Bala, Selvam, Arunan and Shiva. Bala, Shiva & Selvam were formerly
from a Singaporean death metal band called RUDHRA together with Kathi.
In 1996, realizing a partial indifference among members with regards to
the new musical direction that RUHDRA wanted to take; RUDHRA disbanded,
leaving Kathi who took RUDRA into the new musical direction by himself.
A couple of months later Bala, Shiva and Selvam wanted to regroup due
to a common vision they had and to pursue their interest in music.
Subash, whom Selvam knew in the neighborhood, was recruited as the vocalist,
and the four got back to business with regular jamming sessions.
To celebrate this union, the four announced their presence by performing
in a band competition under the band name TRANSMOGRIFY at a local club.
Winning was not the motive in participation but to get the experience of
playing live with Subash. In this competition, Bala played the guitars
while Selvam covered the bass, as there was no bassist yet.
Soon the band decided to crown itself with a new official name having
realized that things were going all too well. Hence, KALIYUGA was born.
In a music scene like that of Singapore's, gigs were organized mainly
for mainstream music. Seeing a metal band in gigs was indeed a rare sight.
Frustrated with this, KALIYUGA with GRAYCODE (a now defunct death grind band)
decided to put up their own gig featuring ONLY metal bands. With the help
of friends, METALFEST 97 was conjured to bring together local talents like,
BASTARDIZED, OSSUARY, PARANORM, GRAYCODE as well as KALIYUGA. This was the
first metal concert on such a large scale to be a huge success due to the
huge audience turn out and sold out tickets.
With the initiation over, KALIYUGA wanted to come up with an album.
With a new permanent bassist (Arunan), the band took 3 years to discover
themselves when they went into a long soul searching period.
Finally, in April 2001 the band finally started recording songs for their
first album. With a new musical vision, the band undertakes this new path
towards metal.
Singaporean death metal band Kaliyuga (KA-lee-u-ga) is scheduled to
release its debut album through Trishul records on the 1st of
November this year.
Even though the album was completely self-produced and polished with
recording equipment, the band managed to retain the raw intensity of the music.
